Flagler Beach, photographed in Flagler county, Florida (05 March 2014).

Ah, March. Springtime, right? Warm air, clear skies, plenty of sunshine! Yay! We survived winter’s grasp! Well, not quite. Not yet, anyhow.

I can’t really describe how unexpectedly bitter and chilly the morning of 05 March 2014 was on the rusted sands of Flagler Beach, Florida — especially after the brief bout of warm sunshine we’d just experienced the week prior. All that warmth was quickly washed away on the 5th, however. A powerful and relentless seabreeze contributed to the chill factor, as did the 100% cloud cover overhead. This wasn’t the kind of morning where you see birds dancing about the early morning sky. No, no, no. The birds, it seemed, were just as bunkered down as the coastal folks.

Poised and positioned with a few straggling seagulls, this group of Black skimmers (Rynchops niger) didn’t seem all too pleased with the gusting winds. I didn’t have the heart to walk closer to take better photographs. With frigid, bitter winds pounding the shore, forcing their flight just felt wrong… Heh.

In search of figure-ground contrast and perhaps a wee bit of shelter from wind, I walked up to and under the Flagler pier. When I was a kid, I loved playing under piers. Not sure why, but they’ve always appealed to me.

I quickly realized that –duh– there was no mercy from the winds to be found under the pier. I mean, damn… these chilly winds were raging!

And so, having covered all of 100 yards or so, I turned and headed back to the Jeep. I was, after all, on my way to work. I figured it would be good to get to work with actual feeling in my toes, a clear nose, and a thawed brain. I wasn’t exactly dressed for this kind of weather. Spring may be coming, but we seem to be undergoing winter’s final dramatic thrashes.
